- Contracts
District 141 negotiates and enforces contracts for four major airlines — United Airlines, US Airways, Philippine Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Mileage Plus.
Union contracts differ from employee handbooks, many of which are made to look and sound like collective bargaining agreements. They are not. A District 141 Organizer can explain.
- Grievance Resolution
A union contract provides legal structure for grievance resolution, unlike an employee handbook. At the Machinist’s Union, the contract is backed by officials you elect to enforce the contract, and it's backed by a responsive system of local lodges in your communities.
This structure of “local” local lodges and elected representatives is unique when compared to other well known unions.
- Democracy
Members of District 141 choose district officers in elections, and Members vote to ratify or reject contracts. At other unions, “business representatives” are appointed to reach deals with corporations.

We hope you find IAM141.org informative and useful, and that you return often. District 141 recognizes it is always in the best interest of Members to have an ongoing exchange of information.
Early in our first eighteen months in office, we introduced the new, continuously updated IAM141.org. We also gave the Messenger newsletter its new, very updated look and quarterly format.
All this was done in-house using the imagination, skills, and abilities of District 141 Members, at a production cost savings of more than forty percent compared to the costs of the preceding decade.
As we took office in District 141, we also welcomed our new President in Washington, with anticipation of improved relationships with the government agencies that affect us the most – the Department of Transportation, Department of Labor, and National Mediation Board (NMB) being at the top of that list. For the first time in almost a decade we looked forward to working with, instead of against, the Administration. Significantly, we saw the NMB change its rules to make it easier, and more fair, for those wanting a union to elect to have a union.
Notwithstanding negotiations and mergers, District 141 believes the opportunity to improve the work life of District 141 Members remains real and attainable.
A part of that success depends on our ability to communicate clearly with each other – the Members telling leadership what is important to them, and the leadership responding and keeping everyone advised as to what is possible. We are pleased that this website and newsletter give us the opportunity to deliver that communication.
