United contract
Contract negotiations at United Airlines resumed last week in Chicago with Federal Mediator Tony Iannone in attendance.
The week started with what is becoming a regular occurrence — discussing and reviewing the company’s use of mandatory overtime in stations throughout the system to determine where and when the required overtime was handled correctly and to point out those areas that were handled incorrectly. As negotiations progress, and the issue of mandatory overtime remains unresolved, we continue to review real time examples of our proposals.
Discussions throughout the week also addressed some outstanding company proposals for language changes regarding scheduling and work area assignments. While no agreement was reached concerning these issues, our ability to have full discussion and explanation from the company, in the presence of the Mediator, was extremely helpful in crafting our responses.
Negotiations will continue on these and other issues for the next few weeks, as we attempt to narrow the unresolved proposals and reach an acceptable agreement that can be brought back to our Members for review and ratification.
Mediator Iannone has indicated that he believes we are successfully negotiating between ourselves and does not plan on changing our schedule, location, or the direction of the talks until he sees that little to no progress is being made. | top
UAL corp’s point system
District 141 has continued discussions with United Airlines regarding the implementation of their “dependability point system.”
One issue that has been of particular importance to the IAM is the ability of individual Members to privately review their status and continue to be aware of any accumulated points received for absence occurrences.
The original approach to this issue was to develop a process within the MARS system that would identify a person’s point total. That has proven to be unworkable from a technical aspect relating to the different computer systems United uses for time and attendance recording.
The company has proposed, and we have agreed with, an email response process that will allow each member to request and receive their individual information through the company email system. This proposal would allow individuals to review their own status without the need to have any Member of management involved. There will be more information regarding this system available in the coming weeks. A test period and station are being identified now so that this process, if it proves workable and secure, can be activated soon.
Additional concerns about their d.p.s. are being addressed through the Grievance Procedure and are scheduled to be presented before a neutral hearing officer within the next week. | top
Merger
Follow up work regarding the United/Continental merger is continuing. Members of the District 141 Merger Team, who met two weeks ago at the Winpisinger Center, have begun fundamental work.
Several stations have already placed merger and solidarity information on web sites and Facebook pages. We encourage all Members to find these sites, including the District 141 website at iam141.org, and join the communication network.
District 141 Organizing is collecting information relating to all aspects of the proposed merger. That includes comparisons of our current Agreements with the Continental Employee Handbook, and with available Teamster contracts within the airlines.
This information will be published in several different formats but it will be shared as quickly as possible with those Members who have indicated they want to receive it personally. So please take a minute to assure that District 141 has your current, correct e-mail address.
141 Officers
Now that the election of Officers is complete in all Transportation Districts, the Transportation Department of our International has scheduled Assistant General Chairmen training. Sessions for all newly elected representatives will provide resources and education needed for enforcing contracts and representing Members.
The four District 141 AGC’s that have been elected and have not attended training in the past are attending classes this week at Winpisinger Center, along with newly elected officers of Districts 142 and 143.
This training is offered every two years, after District elections, and is intended to provide education in the areas of contract enforcement, including arbitration training, and Union administration. Training is scheduled before newly elected Officers officially take office so that they are fully prepared to immediately perform their duties. | top
