Mission Statement "It is the mission of the District Lodge 141 Flight Safety Committee to educate and protect IAM members within the non-technical group as defined and governed by the FAA and the NTSB." These groups consist of, but are not limited to, those members involved in loading and unloading of luggage and cargo, fueling and de-fueling of aircraft, receipt and dispatch, snow removal and deicing of aircraft, handling of hazardous and dangerous goods, customer services, load-planning of aircraft, and any other tasks which are related to the non-technical classifications that fall under the governance of the FAA and the NTSB. It is our belief that all members should be made aware of their
contributions and responsibilities to air safety, and of the critical role that they have
in maintaining the highest degree of professionalism in their job classification.

Committee Structure This Committee will consist of the District Lodge 141 President and General Chairman, Director, Assistant Director, Regional Coordinators and Advisory Members. The permanent Flight Safety Committee was formed at the recommendation of the elected delegates to the 1999 District 141 Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. The goal was to provide involvement for District 141 members outside the Mechanic and Related classifications. Despite our FAA designation as "non-technical" employees, all Ramp, Fleet Service and PCE employees perform numerous functions where attention to safety on the ground is essential to safety in the air. We are developing our own Flight Safety Program using Coordinators from each airline (United, Aloha, Hawaiian and US Airways) and each region of the country. The Coordinators will establish a network of communication to provide members with information and education on matters pertaining to Flight Safety. Flight Safety Coordinators will also teach a 2 hour FAR course that let employees know what responsibilities they have under federal law. Violation of these regulations can involve fines and even jail sentences in some instances. The training will benefit employees, airlines and the traveling public. The ValuJet incident has painfully heightened the attention that must be paid to non-technical issues. We are currently in the process of appointing our Flight Safety coordinators with the approval of President and General Chairman Randy Canale. Once that has been completed, we will announce the appointees and how they can be contacted. |
